Admission Awards

When you apply for admission, you have the chance to receive either the Provost Award or the President’s Scholarship. Your eligibility is determined by a thorough evaluation of your entire admissions application.

These awards are meant to help cover tuition and fees, and the amount will depend on your residency status. If your residency changes, your award amount will also change.

These awards are possible thanks to the generosity of donors through our Mines Foundation, and the President’s Scholarship might be funded by a named Foundation award.

The Provost Award is based on your admission application.

1. Renewable Scholarship: This scholarship is renewable for a total of 8 semesters, equivalent to 4 years of fall/spring undergraduatecoursework. It only applies to undergraduate tuition and fees. The scholarship does not apply to courses taken in the summer.

2. FAFSA Requirement: Unlike some scholarships, you do not need to submit a FAFSA to qualify or renew the Provost Award.

3. Award Amounts: The annual award amounts vary depending on your residency status. If you are a Colorado resident, the award is typically $1,000 annually. For non-residents, the annual amounts range between $6,000 and $10,000.

4. Academic Requirements: To maintain the scholarship, students must:

    • Pass a minimum of 75% of their attempted credits each semester.
    • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.000. This means that the overall grade point average must remain at or above this threshold.
    • Eligibility is reviewed after ever semester.

The President’s Scholarship is based on your admission application.

1. Renewable Scholarship: This scholarship is renewable for a total of 8 semesters, equivalent to 4 years of fall/spring coursework. It only applies to tuition and fees. The scholarship does not apply to courses taken in the summer.

2. FAFSA Requirement: Unlike some scholarships, you do not need to submit a FAFSA to qualify or renew the President’s Scholarship.

3. Scholarship Amounts: The annual scholarship amounts vary depending on your residency status. If you are a Colorado resident, the scholarship can range from $2,500 to $6,000 annually. For non-residents, the annual amounts range between $12,000 and $14,000.

4. Academic Requirements: To maintain the scholarship, students must:

    • Earn a minimum of 24 credits each academic year, which includes only fall and spring semesters (not summer).
    • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.500. This means that the overall grade point average must remain at or above this threshold.
    • Eligibility is reviewed at the conclusion of the spring semester.

The Colorado Scholars Program is a full-tuition scholarship after the COF stipend.  There is no additional application, students are evaluated based on the FAFSA and merit award.

  1. Eligibility Criteria:
    • Colorado Residency: Applicants must be Colorado residents.
    • President’s Merit Scholarship: Recipients must have been awarded a President’s Merit Scholarship based on their admission application.
    • Pell Grant and SAI Eligibility: To be eligible for the Colorado Scholars Program, students must qualify for a Pell Grant based on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) information. The Student Aid Index (SAI) will be used by the Financial Office to evaluate applicants meeting the above criteria to determine eligibility.
  2. Coverage: The scholarship covers tuition and fees after the Colorado Opportunity Fund (COF) stipend. COF is a program that provides financial assistance to eligible Colorado residents attending public colleges and universities in the state.
  3. Renewable Scholarship: The Colorado Scholars Program is renewable, meaning it can be extended for multiple years, specifically for 8 semesters of undergraduate coursework.
  4. FAFSA Requirement: Students must complete the FAFSA each year by the priority deadline. Students must continue to be eligible for the Pell grant and have a comparable SAI to their initial year of eligibility.
  5. Credit and GPA Requirement: To maintain the scholarship, students must:
    • Earn a minimum of 24 credits each academic year, which includes only fall and spring semesters (not summer).
    • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.500. This means that the overall grade point average must remain at or above this threshold.

International First-Year Students are eligible for up to $8,000 in an admissions award.  Your application will be evaluated for merit aid by the Undergraduate Admissions Office.

General Scholarship Application

You are invited to complete the General Scholarship Application! You must complete this application first before viewing other Mines scholarships. The application is available in the Scholarship Portal, found at my.mines.edu, beginning in mid-November and closes on March 1st.  This application is not required to be evaluated for the Provost Award or President’s Scholarship. The priority date for completion is March 1st . Review of applications will begin at that time.  More information on scholarships can be found on our main scholarship page.

Mines does not participate in the WICHE-WUE undergraduate tuition exchange.

Additional Scholarships:
Should you be offered an additional scholarship from Mines, excluding athletic and music scholarships, you will receive the scholarship of the higher amount.

If you receive additional scholarship awards from non-Mines sources your Mines scholarship will not be reduced unless the outside scholarship is specifically for tuition and fees or the amount is more than the cost of attendance. Outside scholarships may affect other need-based assistance Mines offers based on the information you provide on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Your total assistance from all sources (including grants, scholarships, work-study and student loans) cannot exceed the total cost of attendance.

Estimated Cost of Attendance for 2024-2025

The Cost of Attendance serves as a comprehensive budget, encompassing all the financial aspects of your life during the academic year. Some components of this budget, like tuition, mandatory fees, and the rates for housing and food (meal plans) when living on campus, are directly charged by Mines. These charges will appear on your bill.

In addition to these university-related expenses, there are other costs you'll incur individually throughout the school year. These include books, course materials, and allowances for personal expenses and transportation. These are collectively referred to as "living expenses."

The key benefit of including these allowances is that you can use your financial aid to help cover these "living expenses." The inclusion in the Cost of Attendance ensures that you have the necessary funds to manage all the facets of your college life beyond just tuition and fees. The Cost of Attendance serves as your financial guide, addressing both university charges and the various expenses you'll encounter as you pursue your education.

Types of Assistance

Have you applied for assistance?

  • Financial Aid uses the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Beginning in February, you can see if Mines has received your FAFSA on Trailhead.
  • Mines does not use the CSS Profile.  The FAFSA is used to award most types of aid. Admission awards (Provost Award or President's Scholarship) do not require a FAFSA application.

Grants:
Grants are awarded based on information from the FAFSA. State and institutional grants are need-based and influenced by FAFSA information and other types of aid. Grants do not need to be repaid and are not automatically renewable. Funding levels may change annually and eligibility thresholds can be adjusted.

Work Study:
Work Study awards are based on the FAFSA. Students who are enrolled at least half-time (6 credits) may qualify for work study. These funds go to pay a student’s paycheck for hours worked in an on-campus job. The funds are distributed directly to the student as a paycheck and do not go toward tuition/fees. Students find their own job placement once they arrive on campus.  A student may reject their work study award if they do not want to work on campus by contacting the Financial Aid Office.

Federal Student Loans:
Federal Direct loans (formerly called Stafford loans) are awarded to all eligible students who complete a FAFSA. The type(s) of loan offered is/are based on your FAFSA. The subsidized loan is need-based on which interest is paid by the federal government during in-school, grace and deferment periods. The unsubsidized loan is available to all qualified students regardless of need. Payments on both loans are deferred until 6 months after graduation or a student drops below half-time enrollment (6 credits). Both loans have an origination fee of 1.059%.  The interest rate is fixed for the life of the loan when it is originated.

Loan amounts are not based on income; they are set by federal statute based on grade level in college:

Dependent Students per FAFSA Annual Loan Limit Maximum Subsidized
First-Year (0-29.5 Earned Credits) $5,500 $3,500 subsidized
Sophomore (30-59.5 Earned Credits) $6,500 $4,500 subsidized
Junior or Senior (60+ Earned Credits) $7,500 $5,500 subsidized
Independent Students per FAFSA Annual Loan Limit Maximum Subsidized
First-Year (0-29.5 Earned Credits) $9,500 $3,500 subsidized
Sophomore (30-59.5 Earned Credits) $10,500 $4,500 subsidized
Junior or Senior (60+ Earned Credits) $12,500 $5,500 subsidized
Graduate Students $20,500

Federal Parent PLUS Loans:
Parent PLUS Loans are federal loans available to parents of undergraduate students. Parents must pass an online credit check that looks for negative credit factors like delinquency and bankruptcy. The amount of the loan is based upon what the parent requests up to the student’s cost of attendance; the maximum allowable amount will be listed in Trailhead once the student is awarded. A FAFSA must be on file before an application will be considered. Parents may apply for PLUS loans beginning June 1, 2024.

Private Loans are made through banks, credit unions, or other financial institutions. Mines does not have any preferred providers for private loans. If you are interested in a private loan, you will want to apply in June.

Awarding will begin in Spring. You can view your awards on Trailhead.

Access Your Financial Aid Information

  • View Aid
  • View scholarships, grants, loans and work study
  • Access your College Financing Plan (can be saved or printed and used as an official "award" letter)
  • View Cost of Attendance for budgeting purposes (listed on your general overview)

If you do not see any aid, please view your Requirements in Trailhead:
