Information on Types of Financial Aid
Athletic Scholarships may not appear on your award announcement. Our office receives notification of athletic scholarships in the summer. What you have been told by your coach is your offer from Athletics.
Grants are awarded based on information from the FAFSA. State and Mines Grants are need-based and influenced by FAFSA information and other types of aid. Grant awards are not repaid and do not automatically renew. Funding levels may change annually, and eligibility thresholds may be adjusted.
Work Study awards are based on the FAFSA. These funds go to pay a student’s paycheck for hours worked in an on-campus job and are paid twice a month directly to the student. Students apply for jobs once they arrive on campus. A student may reject their award at any time by emailing the Financial Aid Office.
Federal Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans are student loans (formerly called Stafford) awarded to all eligible students. The type(s) and amounts of loan offered are based on your FAFSA. The subsidized loan is need-based on which interest is paid by the federal government during in-school, grace, and deferment periods. The unsubsidized loan is available to all qualified students regardless of need. Amounts are based on grade-level at the start of the school year. For rates and terms, please visit https://finaid.mines.edu/loans.
Federal Parent PLUS Loan is available to parents of dependent undergraduate students. Parents must pass an online credit check that looks for negative credit factors like delinquency and bankruptcy. The amount of the loan is based upon what the parent requests up to the student’s cost of attendance; the maximum allowable amount will be listed in Trailhead. Parents may apply for PLUS loans beginning in June at https://studentaid.gov.

Understanding Cost
- The Cost of Attendance (COA) is not your bill. It is an average of all your expenses for the school year. Expenses “Billed by Mines” are an average of what you may be charged and will need to pay to Mines. “Other Costs” are things you will need to account for, but you do not pay to Mines.COA includes tuition and fees; housing and food; and allowances for books, course materials, supplies, equipment, transportation, loan fees and personal expenses. It can also include dependent care, rental or purchase of a personal computer, costs related to a disability and reasonable costs for eligible study-abroad programs. The cost of attendance impacts the maximum amount of aid you can borrow.

Transfer Student 2025-2026 Estimated Cost of Attendance
BILLED BY MINES
Tuition: This figure is based on the full-time enrollment of an undergraduate student which is 15-19 credits for tuition purposes.
College Opportunity Fund (COF): For Colorado residents the tuition figure includes the COF. Do not subtract COF from the tuition figure.
Fees: This figure includes mandatory fees only; it does not include the orientation fee or student health insurance plan. For additional information on fees for the current academic year, please visit our website finaid.mines.edu.
Housing and Food Allowances: Average figure for a student living on campus with a meal plan. Your actual charges are on your living arrangement and meal plan choice. You can find current-year rates here: https://www.mines.edu/residence-life/rates/. Students who live off campus or with parent(s) may have a lower budget, which may affect the amounts and types of aid awarded. Mines does not bill students for this expense if they live off campus or with parent(s).
OTHER COSTS
Books, Course Materials, Supplies & Equipment, Personal, and Transportation Allowances: These expenses are not payable to Mines, but you can use financial aid to cover these expenses. It is anticipated students work over the summer to earn enough funding to cover some of these expenses. These numbers are averages for students and your actual expenses may vary.
Loan Fees: Average of origination fees charged on student loans. This money is not payable to Mines; the loan fee is deducted proportionately from each loan disbursement you receive. This means the money you receive is less than the amount you actually borrow. You are responsible for repaying the entire amount you borrowed and not just the amount you received. For more information visit: studentaid.gov.
Understanding Net Price
Net Price: A term used nationally to explain the difference between the full Cost of Attendance (COA) and your Aid Offer. While it is true that you will need to cover these expenses, you do not always need to use financial aid to meet this need.
What you owe a school will be their direct costs minus your financial aid. To compare the cost for each school you are considering you need to understand what your direct costs at each school will be. For example, some schools like Mines, have a first year live on-campus requirement so housing and food are direct expenses. You may be considering a school near your home where you can commute so you do not have those direct costs.
Total Cost – Total Grants & Scholarships = Net Price
Payment Schedule
Bills are generated on a semester basis using the student’s exact enrollment, meal plan and housing costs. Financial Aid disburses by the first day of each term. Payment for each semester is due the day after census unless you are enrolled in a payment plan. View the academic calendar for payment due dates. https://www.mines.edu/registrar/academic-calendar/
